Question: What does a binding mean?
Answer: It means one physical printed matter, for instance a newspaper issue, a periodical issue, an ephemera or a book.
Question: When will all the papers until 1890 be digitised and online?
Answer: More material will be in online use during 2006. The objective is to have all the newspapers until 1890 online during 2006. The material is being re-processed in order to be able to highlight the hit on the page.
Question: Are there any plans to digitise the volumes of newer newspapers in the same way ? for instance from the beginning of the 20th century up until now?
Answer: The copyright law restricts the online use of newer material. According to the law the material is copyright free only when 70 years have passed since the author?s death. For instance every writer of an article in a newspaper is an author.
Question: Almost all the newspapers are in Swedish. When will there be newspapers in Finnish available?
Answer: The majority of the Finnish newspapers were in Swedish in the 19th century. All the newspapers until 1890 will be online in both the official languages, as they were published.
Question: On which terms can the information in the digital collection be used or borrowed? May I use the material in the Finnish Historical Newspaper Library to illustrate my paper?
Answer: material in the Historical Newspaper Library is copyright free. The images in the Newspaper Library can be used but the Historical Newspaper Library must be referred to.
Question: In some cases the number of the newspaper issue is missing in the upper corner or is replaced with a zero.
Answer: There have been diverse formats in the numbering of the papers. A zero as the issue number usually means a sample issue.
Question: The Pdf file loaded way too slowly!
Answer: Please check out the capacity of your computer and the speed of your network connection. The biggest file sizes are hundreds of megabytes.
Question: Why is the maximum amount of search results 500, even if I used two different search terms and one of them is known to result in more references.
Answer: It is time-consuming to browse 500 search results. Instead, it is efficient to use the same search terms in consecutive searches and to limit the search in certain titles and/or periods.
Question: In the Article Index the line feed is shown as a break-ing word. Could this be helped?
Answer: The hyphens originate from the typed article index. The hyphens cannot be automatically removed because in this case the word "Keski-Suomi" would turn into the word "KeskiSuomi". It would take a lot of work to correct hundreds of thousands of records manually.
Question: The school system / education / upbringing should also be included in the Article Index as a subdirectory.
Answer: "The Index was compiled during the late 19th century and indexing does not follow modern principles.? The Article Index is neither updated nor re-classified.
Question: Is there an article index covering the material for instance until the end of the 19th century? In some searches I can find articles in Rauman Lehti but I cannot find the actual texts.
Answer: A more covering index is not available. The reference to the newspaper article is a functional link if the digital newspaper already exists in the Newspaper Library.
Question: Is there a way to get an English translation of the articles? When can these be read in English? For now, how may I get an article translated?
Answer: At the moment there are no plans to implement automatic translation.
